 Why Save Trees?

The woodlands of the earth are in great threat. The abundant jungles of our earth are rapidly becoming extinct. These jungles are being cut down for various purposes like industrial development, farming, for production of paper and wood etc. But due to this destruction we are not only damaging the earth but also harming other species. One always wonders why we have to save trees. What do they give us? Trees are the largest and longest living things on earth, they live for more than 3000 years and how much time it takes to cut down one tree not even 3 hours. But the tree that is lost cannot be re-created in 3 minutes; it takes another 3000 years for us to get back a tree of the same size and usefulness. After all this don’t you think we should save trees?

There is not only 1 reason to save a tree but there are several. Trees have global implication on not only the life but the quality of it. Trees help us cleanse the air by intercepting airborne particles, reduce heat and absorbs pollutants, hence trees clean air. Save treesTrees are effective in blocking sound. These trees can help block sound coming from the neighbourhood and it also has the potential to diminish major noises from crowded roads, railway stations or airports. Together with blocking the sound they provide oxygen which is an essential need for the humans. Trees improve the quality of air that we breathe. In one month trees are able to produce oxygen required by 10 people for one year. This means that when the tree produces oxygen it also absorbs harmful gases like carbon dioxide from the environment, hence making the surrounding cooler. Trees are the ones which regulate and cools down the climate on earth in conjunction with other such valuable services as preventing erosion, landslides, and making the most infertile soil rich with life.

Trees are providing us with almost all that we need to survive, and in return what are we doing? Over past few years we have destroyed almost 89% of the forest cover that earth had in the 19th century, whereas the remaining 11% is under great threat of being destroyed or ruin. The tropical rainforests covered almost 14% of earth’s land once upon a time, but now it covers only 6% of earth’s land. Due to deforestation, we have lost 137 plant types, animals of various species, insects of various types and all this because of man’s brutal behaviour towards environment. As the forests slowly fade away we are loosing out on cures of some serious diseases. Presently, there are 121 drugs which are derived from plant sources and retailed worldwide. One fourth percent of the human pharmaceutical products are originated from forest ingredients. Through this obliteration more than 50%of the world’s fauna and flora and organisms will be ruined or relentlessly jeopardized over next few years.

We are all aware about these facts, everyday in the newspaper there is something or the other about deforestation, but we have decided to close our eyes and ears and sit in a corner and let the world do what it wants. Haven’t you made yourself unheard? Or are you just pretending not to hear anything? Just ask yourself, are you bothered about the environment? If you are, please wake up, and help save our earth for future generations.

Doomsday not far

Deforestation is clearing the earth’s land in massive scale not only affecting the land but also the quality of land. Forests still cover more than 25% of the earth’s land but sooner or later this 25% will also be lost. The world’s rainforests will disappear in next 100 years if the rate of deforestation continues the same way. There are many reasons for which these trees are being cut down, but the main reason is that people need money to provide their family with food and other daily requirements.

People gain their requirement by cutting the trees and selling the wood of the tree. This is also known as logging operation which provides us with wood and paper. This operation causes a lot of trees being cut down. Another way that these loggers lead deforestation is when they build roads from remote forest areas.  Another biggest driver of deforestation is agriculture. Farmers often cut forest to make more space for farming and grazing livestock.

Don't let them fallNot all deforestation is intentional. Some of it is caused by both humans and natural hazards like wildfires, overgrazing which may prevent the growth of young trees. Deforestation has a lot of negative effects of environment and social life of humans. The most vivid impact is a loss of habitat for millions of species. On earth 70%of land is used by animal and plants as their homes, and many cannot survive the deforestation that destroys their homes. Deforestation also causes climate change, which often results in lesser rain and also leads in rise in the climate. The soil in the forest will dry out because sun will directly hit the surface, whereas if there were trees they would block the sunlight. Without trees many former forest lands can quickly become barren deserts.

Removing trees take away the forest of portions of its shade, which blocks the sun’s rays during the day and holds in heat at night. This disruption leads to more extreme temperatures swings that can be harmful to plants and animals.

Trees also play an important role in absorbing the greenhouse gases that causes global warming. This destruction will lead to fewer forests which means larger amount of greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere which will eventually increase the rate of global warming.

The best solution to deforestation would be to simply stop cutting down trees. Though deforestation rates have slowed a bit in recent years, financial realities make this unlikely to occur. A more effective solution is to manage the forest resources and eliminate clear-cutting which will make sure that forest environments remain intact. The cutting of trees should be balanced with the planting of tree. There should be enough young trees to replace the older ones felled in any given forest but this too wont help much a lot of time for the young tree to grow older. Though this will not help a lot but still its better than having nothing. The number of new tree plantations is growing each year, but their total still equals a tiny fraction of the Earth’s forested land. So the best way to save our earth is to stop cutting trees, or else the doomsday is not away.

Die hard

What is happening in today’s world? Why is everyone under so much pressure? Is it recession or just development which is increasing rapidly and people are losing control over it. But this development has brought a lot of tremendous changes in the biosphere and our environment. Due to this development there has been a great imbalance in the environment, which sooner or later will affect us, and we will be in great danger due to this development.

It is estimated that more than 11-15 million hectares of tropical forests are lost each year. These forests cover more than 7% of the earth’s land and contain more than half the known species of plants and animals, this also includes 80% of insects and 90% of primates. Died HardThese tropical rainforests also provide half the world’s main crops. Not only does it provide crops but it also gives us 25% of different drugs. It is found that 1,400 plants in the forests have anticancer plants. Some areas of rainforest are rich in precious metals such as gold and silver. Large deposits of aluminium, iron ore, copper and zinc are also found. Infrastructure development and the influx of miners into any area of pristine rainforest inevitably results in deforestation. Mercury (used in gold mining) contamination is common.

These forests are mainly disappearing because of mainly, logging, mining, hydropower and hunger for land. Temperate and northern old-growth forests are being destroyed by the timber and paper industries. Not only is the livelihood of native peoples of the forest being undermined, every year thousands of plant and animal species disappear forever. Governments and corporations tend to blame rainforest destruction on the actions of subsistence farmers and settlers. However, in countries such as Brazil, government schemes have deliberately encouraged the colonization of rainforests, and throughout the tropics small-scale farmers have been forced off their own lands and into poorer forest areas by large agricultural companies. The exact rate at which rainforests are presently being destroyed is not known, as there have been no global assessments since 1990. At that time, an area of about 150.000 sq. Km of tropical rainforest, equivalent to the size of Great and Wales, was being destroyed every year. A similar area of forest was also being damaged or degraded. On average, the rate of destruction has increased during the last few years because of very extensive deliberate destruction of forests in Brazil and Indonesia.  Many things that we buy contribute to rainforest loss. Tropical hard woods such as mahogany, sapele or meranti are obvious examples. Tropical fruit plantations are often located in areas that were once tropical rainforests. Some companies are still involved in large industrial projects which help destroy rainforest.

Now that we have already lost so many trees and destroyed so many forests,  and we are in  such a  position that we wont be able to revive them, so the best way to save earth for our future generations is that we make sure we don’t cut down any more forests, and plant as many trees as possible. Saving trees is the best option or else we have to die hard. SAVE TREES.

 DEATH BUT NOT BIRTH

Sitting on the heap of leaves

I wonder why everyone believes

That nature is God’s beauty

Which we human have made it to calamity

We were right,

Development is all for which we need to fight

Whether it means to destroy our nature

We will still continue like a crazy creature.

How many trees have we cut down?

How many green places have we made brown?

Who is responsible for this?

Us or someone who disappeared with the mist

 Its not that far

If we continue this way

One fine day

We will regret the development done

And our lives are for which we will run

A day will come

When trees will become monuments of some

That day, animals will fight to death

Next will be a stop on our breath

The situation will become worse

Everything will be under curse

There will be no man on land,

Only soil, water and sand

Nothing will survive

We won’t be able to revive

Anything and everything on earth

This is the doomsday DEATH but not birth

Deforestation

Destroying earth for our space and luxury

Economy is what becomes our fury

Forests are being slashed

Organisms are being smashed

Reviving the nature will be hard

Entering a new world will be without guardWe are the only one living

Silence will be all around

The world will be of no sound

All that one will hear

Thunder and sounds of fear

Intractable consequences will arise

Outlandish sun will rise

Nothing will be left; everything will disappear with no price.

Facts, Figures and Statistics

  • We are suffering the loss of Earth’s supreme biological reserves. The tropical rainforests once sheltered 14% of the planet’s land mass; and presently, they guard only 6% of the earth’s values.
  • Both environmentalists and experts reckon that the remaining wooded areas could be eaten and consumed in approximately less than a period of 40 years. Thousands of acres of tropical forests are lost every other second with disastrous and dilapidating consequences for both emerging and industrialized countries.
  • Experimentalists estimate that deforestation is responsible for the loss of 137 plant types, animal of various sorts, and insect species every passing day due to man’s ruthless steps. The totality equates to 50,000 losses of species’ lives per year. As the forest essentials fade away, so do many probable cures for grave and serious diseases.
  • At present, 121 recommended drugs retailed worldwide are derived from plant sources. The 25% of humankind’s pharmaceuticals also originated from the forest’s ingredients. Almost 1% of the woodland has been tested for more medicinal cure by scientists; and the rest of the promising flora offer more possibilities of cure.
  • Through rainforest deforestation, however, practically 50% of the world’s species of flora, fauna and organisms will be ruined or relentlessly jeopardized over the next years to come. The very reason why our rich nature source is being depleted of values is because of multi logging corporations, short-sighted administration and carelessly irresponsible land owners.
  • The deforestation facts are widely known to man and thus should be given proper action. Both government and the localities should take advantage of the offered solutions to deforestation problems. If dealt with properly, our rainforests can endow the entire population’s need for these biological reserves on a perpetual basis.
  • Deforestation puts the earth at risk in a number of serious ways. Among their many functions, trees and plants play an important role as climate stabilizers by removing heat-trapping greenhouse gases (including water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, ozone) from the air and holding them in their leaves, roots, wood and soil. When trees are destroyed, the greenhouse gases they’ve been hanging onto go back into the atmosphere, where they speed up global warming.
  • Scientists predict the consequences of global warming will be wide-ranging and include an increase in floods, heat waves, droughts, wildfires, species extinction and the spread of disease. It’s estimated that 20 to 25 percent of all carbon emissions are the result of deforestation and land use changes, about the same (or even slightly higher) percentage of emissions that come from cars and trucks in the United States.
  • An estimated 70 percent of the planet’s animals and plants reside in forests; if these habitats disappear, so will many of their residents. The Nature Conservancy reports that tropical rainforests occupy only 12 percent of the globe but contain over half of the world’s known animal species and plants. If the rainforests continue to vanish at their current rate, they could be totally wiped out as functioning ecosystems within 100 years.
  • Forests also play a key role in protecting watersheds and preventing soil erosion, flooding and landslides. Another devastating consequence of deforestation is its effect on global poverty. The World Wildlife Fund states that forest resources sustain most of the planet’s 1.2 billion people living in extreme poverty, who rely on forests for their basic needs and livelihoods.
  • A driving force behind deforestation is money. Forest products represent a $270 billion-a-year industry, according to the World Bank. From paper to furniture to building materials, the world-particularly first-world nations-has a seemingly insatiable appetite for things made from trees. The BBC reports that “At least half of the world’s timber and nearly three-quarters of world’s paper is consumed by a mere 22% of the world’s population, those living in the United States, Europe and Japan.”
  • While logging is regulated and practiced using sustainable methods in some parts of the globe, in other places, particularly impoverished and developing nations, logging takes place illegally and to devastating effect. According to The Nature Conservancy, “As much as 30 percent of hardwood lumber and plywood traded globally is of suspicious origin.” The group reports that in Indonesia alone, approximately 70 percent of timber exports are illegal. The problem extends beyond just those places where forests are being destroyed illegally.
