Cell Phone Driving: A social issue?

Dialling, answering and having a conversation on phone while driving is dangerous. While dialling or answering the phone the person has to take his eyes off the road. Also, one of the hands remains engaged while using the phone. Hands-free is used by some people to avoid the danger of an accident. But this does not reduce the risk as the person’s attention is in the conversation instead of the road. A study by the University of Utah states that the motorists talking on phone through hands-free are 18% slower in braking and 17% slower in regaining the same speed.

Another option is to park the vehicle on a side and then talk. But  this might not be always possible as a person might be stuck in traffic at a signal from where it is impossible to move. Also, a person might try to park his car hastily to receive the call before the call ends. So, the driver can indulge into rough driving which can cause an accident. Therefore, I believe that avoiding the phone calls while driving is a more feasible option.

Results of a survey by Nationwide Mutual Insurance in January 2007 states that out of the 1200 people surveyed, 73% of people talk on phone while driving. Many of the people who talk on phone while driving has met fatal accidents and few of them have even died.  Most commonly, the people belonging to the age group 35-45 years use the phone maximum while driving as they are usually working men and women. They usually receive the phones while driving because the calls are important as they are related to work.  But it is risky to talk on phone while driving. So I want to aware these people about the danger of talking on phone while driving.

To avoid accidents regarded to the phone issue, government of many countries has banned the use of cell phone while driving. The person who breaks the rules is penalized. Yet, the rule is broken as people do not comprehend the importance of implementing this rule. Such people not only hurt themselves but also the hurt the other innocent people like the pedestrians which is not ethical. So, I want to aware people about the dangers of talking on phone while driving and want them to obey this traffic rule.
